COST Action IS1405: Building Intrapartum Research Through Health –an interdisciplinary whole system approach to understanding and contextualizing physiological labour and birth (BIRTH)

Attendance: The meeting was attended by 57 participants, most of them members of the COST Action from Europe and further participants of Israel, South Africa and Australia.
Wednesday, February 7th
Proceedings opened on Wednesday, February 7th at 09:00 with a meeting of the Core Group. Progress and future plans for the Working Groups 1-6, ESR & STSM, upcoming meetings, the second training school and the final conference were all discussed in accordance with the MOU of the Action. The 2018 STSM call and deadlines were agreed and dissemination activities of the Action, including the publication of open access papers, decided. The Chair highlighted the very positive 24 month monitoring report the Action had received from COST.
Following that, Professor Pia Gabriel-Schärer, Vice director of the Department of Social work and Professor Dr. Claudia Meier Magistretti, the host of this COST-meeting, welcomed the audience at the opening of the plenary session in the afternoon. Chair of the Action, Professor Soo Downe, welcomed all participants to the meeting and chaired the plenary session. The session explored the work of the Action IS1405 to date, including presentations by the Working Group Leads and the leads of the ECI think tank and STSM group. A short introduction to the Lucerne Training School of February 12th to 14th was presented by the Training School lead.
Invited Australian expert Sarah Buckley lectured about “The impact of Birth on lifelong wellbeing” before working group meetings started.
Thursday, February 8th
The Workshop of the second invited expert, Sheena Byrom, was cancelled due to the health related absence of the speaker. Working groups met instead for the whole day up to the afternoon, when the ECI and WG6 meetings were planned to be held in parallel. The ECI meeting was replaced by a planning session for grant applications lead by Professor Soo Downe. After a plenary, where WG leads presented the results of their work, the day concluded with the meetings of the STSM group and the group of B3 (Babies Born Better) survey.
Thursday, February 8th
The final day of the Action started at 09:00 on Friday, February 9th with the Action’s Management Committee meeting led by the Chair of the Action, Professor Soo Downe. The meeting ended at 12:3
A leisure program was offered to the participants including a guided city tour, a common dinner and a special Lucerne carnival special event.
