COST Action IS1405: Building Intrapartum Research Through Health –an interdisciplinary whole system approach to understanding and contextualizing physiological labour and birth (BIRTH)

Attendance: The meeting was attended by 58 participants on the 1st day, 57 participants on the 2nd day and 51 participants on the 3rd day. All participants were members of the COST Action from across Europe, 2 from South Africa.
Proceedings opened on Monday 6th March at 09:00 with a meeting of the Core Group. In the meantime and while the Core group members were attending the meeting, a walking tour of the city, including visit to the castle (Koules) and the National History Museum was organized with the help of Vivian Voulgaraki, for those COST members already there but not members of the core group. Following lunch, a 30-minute long Cretan music event presented by Dimitris Stefanakis, Cretan Lyra and Evangelos Tsagarakis, Lute, opened the works of the Meeting and following that, Chair of the Action, Professor Soo Downe, welcomed all participants to the meeting and chaired a plenary session. The session explored the work of the Action IS1405 to date, including presentations by the Working Group Leads and discussed the work that was planned for the next years by the WGs in relation to the MOU of the Action. This was followed by workshops on outreach activities by Soo Downe. After that there was a B3 (Babies Born Better) survey meeting and an STSM meeting.
The 2nd day of the meeting opened at 8:30 in the morning with the 30-minute-long Cretan dance performance “Gaia, Be the Bee!” by the Fysalida dance company of Georgia Petrali, with Georgia Petrali on the main role and also Dimitra Daskalaki and Marina Christodoulaki. Following that, the meetings of all working groups took place during the morning and afternoon including tea breaks. In the afternoon there were also the meetings of the ECI group and the Working Group 6. The meeting concluded with a plenary session including WG leads feedback. The evening came to a pleasant conclusion with an optional dinner at the Cretan Tavern “Rakas”, within walking distance from the Venue place.
The final day of the Action started at 09:00 on Wednesday 8th March 2017 with the Action’s Management Committee meeting led by the Chair of the Action, Professor Soo Downe. The meeting ended at about 13:00. Following that, there was a guided tour at the Archaeological site of Knossos for those of the Action members who had a late flight. The guide Katerina Stolidou gave an excellent 3-hour long onsite tour of the Knossos Palace, which was a most rewarding conclusion of a most successful event.
