Social media campaign: #Bastatacere: le madri hanno voce” (#breakthesilence: mothers have voice)

Initiated and coordinated by Elena Skoko and Alessandra Battisti, members of COST Action BIRTH, #Bastatacere: le madri hanno voce” (#breakthesilence: mothers have voice) is an
Italian social media campaign on obstetric violence.

Elena Skoko is a member of Work Group 4 (subgroup on obstetric violence) and of the WG6 (activists).

During her STSM at UCLAN, Elena explored the role of mothers-activists in defining of the maternity care policies in the UK. She launched the social media campaign in Italy “#bastatacere: le madri hanno voce” (#breakthesilence: mothers have voices) through the Facebook page

The campaign aimed to raise awareness on the phenomenon of obstetric violence (abuse, disrespect and mistreatment in childbirth, birth trauma), following similar initiatives in the US (launched by and Croatia (by the association RODA).

The initiative collected over 1.000 personal stories in the format of photo/protest-banner and it had over 22.000 likes in only 15 days. The campaign had great impact in the press and in the society.

After the campaign, the group of mothers-activists who coordinated the campaign formed the national Obstetric Violence Observatory – OVOItalia (, member of the InterOVO international network.

OVOItalia launched, on May 23, the survey QuestOVO in order to continue collecting stories and information on obstetric violence and raise awareness on the phenomenon.
